The
national AIDS organizations aren't much better. Mired in
internal politics and too-timid tactics, their leaders
dance like marionettes when the slightest petal of
recognition falls their way. None demonstrate anger,
outrage or urgency. Shame on their boards for
perpetuating such mediocrity.

the

“Why
Ride?”
AIDS
Network
uses old
statistics
that
bear no
relevance
to the
current
Wisconsin
epidemiological
data.
Additionally,
they
falsely
state
that
there
were
56,300
new
U.S.,
AIDS
cases in
2008,
when in
fact
there
were
56,300
HIV

There is
a
difference
between
HIV
infection
and
AIDS)

I told one of my students that the most
memorable Reagan AIDS moment for me was
at the 1986 centenary rededication of
the Statue of Liberty. The Reagans were
there sitting next to French President
Francois Mitterand and his wife,
Danielle. Bob Hope was on stage
entertaining the all-star audience. In
the middle of a series of one-liners
Hope quipped, "I just heard that the
Statue of Liberty has AIDS but she
doesn't know if she got it from the
mouth of the Hudson or the Staten Island
Fairy." As the television camera panned
the audience, the Mitterands looked
appalled. The Reagans were laughing. By
the end of 1989 and the Reagan years,
115,786 women and men had been diagnosed
with AIDS in the United States, and more
than 70,000 of them had died. |

convinced that they should continue
to fund AIDS Network for a full year
grant cycle. They have once again
decided not to fully fund AIDS
Network.

Dr. Jim Vergeront and the Department
of Health Services must change the
ASO funding formula. Under the
current funding formula AIDS Network
is being overfunded by the DHS to
the tune of $172,586.00.
Funding received by Wisconsin’s two
AIDS service organizations (AIDS
Network and ARCW) has been based on
the number of confirmed HIV/AIDS
cases in each of the five public
health regions.

ACT UP Milwaukee's organizing
meeting took place on August 18-19,
1989, when it hosted ACT UP New York
and prepared for its first action.
On August 25, the group demonstrated
in front of the Federal Building to
protest the federal and state
governments' inadequate response to
the AIDS epidemic. ACT UP Milwaukee
described itself as "a diverse group
of individuals united in anger and
compassion and committed to direct
action to end the AIDS crisis." |
