ACT UP Wisconsin | AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power

I realized how angry I was getting. Just like the old days. Then I started thinking: Why does everyone say no one can get angry about AIDS anymore?
You who are reading this, are you angry? Or are you too burned out or have some other excuse? Or are you just too lazy to be angry anymore?

~Larry Kramer

From our friend Dab Garner:

Will we break the standing 2004 record for ADAP (AIDS Drug Assistance Program) Waiting lists which eventually totaled 1,629 people?  Of these, there were deaths in several states. ADAP is a program under Ryan White funding which helps financially challenged American men, women and children afford life saving HIV medications and services. The waiting list has increased 1000% since May, 2009.

The most up to date situation for ADAP Waiting Lists in the United States is:

As of May 13, 2010 - 1,056 total individuals in 10 states

Hawaii: 3 individuals Montana: 18 individuals Utah: 97 individuals

Idaho: 27 individuals North Carolina: 506 individuals Wyoming: 17 individuals

Iowa: 77 individuals South Carolina: 81 individuals

Kentucky: 200 individuals South Dakota: 30 individuals

The following states are expecting to start waiting lists, or institute cost containment measure, which will restrict access prior to March 31, 2010:

Arizona - California - Hawaii - Ohio - Indiana - Mississippi - Missouri - North Dakota - Tennessee

I guess it boils down to the fact that Dab the AIDS Bear and I held over 5,000 American men, women and children as they lost their battles with AIDS before life saving HIV medications became available in 1996. Included in this number were 3 of my partners, my god child and way too many friends.

With the billions of dollars of aid and HIV medications going to other countries, not one American should have to die without access to life saving treatments and services. Please contact the Governors in each of the above states and let them know ADAP waiting lists are not acceptable in our country.

The lives of financially challenged Americans with HIV and AIDS depend on your help.

big bear hug,

Dab Garner

UN: 4 million on AIDS drugs, others still in need

About 4 million people are now getting AIDS drugs worldwide — a 10-fold jump in five years — but 5 million others are still in dire need of the medicine, U.N. health officials estimated in a report issued Wednesday.

U.S. Sen. Harkin: Statement at the executive session on the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act of 2009

“Today marks an important milestone in our ongoing national struggle with HIV and AIDS. Twenty-eight years ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued its first warning about the disease we now know as AIDS. Today, we mark the fourth reauthorization of the Ryan White CARE Act, the most comprehensive legislation for the prevention and treatment of HIV and the AIDS virus.

“In those early days, we failed on all levels – in government, in business, and in the media – to recognize the danger posed by this disease. While its victims suffered in silence and stigma, those who had the power to help shamefully did nothing.

“But then a young boy’s courage awoke the nation to the very real consequences of AIDS. Suddenly, a disease that seemed so distant was in our homes every day, and we could no longer claim that AIDS was someone else’s problem. The nation realized it was a virus that knows no color, religion, political affiliation, or income status. And I think Ryan White would be proud of the effort we are putting forth today with this bipartisan compromise we’ve worked so hard on.
